Cannot watch on ATV and iOS simultaneously

Hello,

I’ve been happily using the ATV app for a few months, and decided to invest in the iOS app today. The first sign of trouble was when I scanned for channels on my iPhone - channels said the tuner was in use. I exited channels on my ATV and successfully scanned on my iPhone.

I can view live tv on either device, but not at the same time. Whichever device I try to begin viewing on second displays a black screen for ~20 seconds, then displays “Tuner not available”.

Scanning for tuners only displays one tuner at one IP address on both my devices. I know both tuners on my HDhomerun are functional by testing them in the Hauppage app.

AppleTV 4 64GB tvOS 10.0
iPhone 7 plus 256gb iOS 10.0.2
HDhomerun Dual ATSC
OTA channels only in the USA

Does your hdhomerun have one or two coax inputs on the back?

Thanks for the quick reply! 2 coax connections on the back. I have the antenna into a 2 way splitter, going into each input.

Ah ok. That model is quite old and very unique… it’s the only one SiliconDust made with two separate coax inputs. We haven’t been able to get our hands on one to test it thoroughly.

Are you using a mac or a PC?

Yes it’s a bit of an antique haha. I was using it with my HTPC build back 10+ years ago.

I own PCs but have access to a MacBook Pro if needed.

Can you run the “hdhomerun config” utility… I think it’s available on windows too if you’ve installed the hdhomerun utilities.

Check to make sure that both tuners (-0 and -1) are set to “us-bcast” mode.

Both are (and look like they already were) set to us-bcast. I still only see one tuner in Channels config, and it seems to be only using tuner 0.

Similar behavior on the PC (only on tuner 0). Selecting a channel on the PC, then selecting any channel on my iPhone automatically kills the PC feed and begins playback on the iPhone. However the PC errors with “Tuner in use” and gives me the option to cancel or override.

The HDHomerun setup application has a number of selectable BDA compatibility modes - J River, MediaPortal, WMC, etc. There’s also selections for “Virtual Channel Table Mode”. Might any of these help?

If you’re interested, I’d be happy to swap you for a newer HDhomerun

UPDATE - seemingly inexplicably I can now watch simultaneously on the iPhone and Apple TV!! Was the app updated overnight or are more mysterious forces at work?

Either way - this customer is happy, and grateful for devs who are so involved in their product! Keep up the great work! Looking forward to DVR functionality in the future with high hopes my QNAP NAS will be supported

Nothing changed on our end. Perhaps running hdhomerun config sorted out the second tuner.
