CGNAT and Dynamic DNS

Hey, my provider uses CGNAT. I've tried using Tailscale and it works with a cellular connection but I can never get it to work with my ipad when connected to hotel wifi. So I was doing some looking around and saw some information on dynamic dns. I searched previous posts and saw one from 2022 but didn't think it was what I was looking for.

Is there a way to use the dvr streaming outside of home on a different wifi than at home with the dynamic dns? I have signed up for Duck DNS. I also pay for PIA VPN. I'm just looking for any option that would work.

DyDNS works if you have a semi-static (i.e. does not change frequently) IP address. Depending on your service provider, your CGNAT IP address may change frequently (every few minutes), which DyDNS may not keep up with.

Tailscale should work without issue behind CGNAT.
I have personally used it behind double NAT and CGNAT.

Some hotels may block VPN services. Example. I can't connect via Tailscale from the local pub WiFi, but IPSec works.

If I were you, I would review your Tailscale config and get that to work.

  1. What system do you have Tailscale client installed on?
  2. Are you advertising sub-net routes?
  3. Are you trying to access via the Tailnet assigned IP or the IP address on your local LAN?

I have Tailscale installed on a Windows 10 desktop.

I'm not advertising any sub-net routes.

I downloaded the Tailscale app for iOS and connect. Then I Just open the Channels app and pick "away from home".

If using taiscale you should pick home... and put the Tailscale IP of your server.
