Hi, I've moved my DVR from my synology NAS to my Mac Mini and was storing recordings on the Mac (albeit very few as I've just moved over). I hadn't realised that I could store my recordings on my synology via network share but leave the dvr on my NAS. The original folders for the DVR are still on the NAS, should I just point the location to this? Or should I remove the DVR from the Nas and set up new folders?
We don't normally recommend recording to a network share. But if your devices are all hardwired it will probably work okay.
Remember to keep your bandwidth in mind when making decisions: USB2 has 480Mbps, USB3/3.0/3.1 has 5Gbps, and USB3.2 has 10Gbps; home ethernet has 1Gbps (generally).
If you know your network can handle it, it ought to be OK. (I used NFS shares on a NAS for DVR recording and had very little issue, even with multiple recordings at a time; as always YMMV.)
Thanks for both replies, I'll give it a go, should I just point the DVR to the DVR storage folders on the NAS from when I was using my synology as DVR?
Since he is using a Mac Mini as the Channels Host I would probably use AFP. At my office I had problems with SMB from Linux so I switched to NFS and the problems went away so a fan of NFS with Linux.
SMB performance could vary based upon the version. The version of Samba shipped is macOS is outdated IIRC, so that may be an issue ...
I know recent macOS uses SMB as the default for sharing. But I have found that AFP works better for all of us that connect to Synology File Shares over a VPN (normally 5 connections daily averaging 10 shares).
