Channels 101 for New Install?

Kudos on your website and the ordering process for the DVR subscription. One of the best I’ve seen. On to my questions…

I’ve got Channels DVR installed on my server (A 2011 iMac) - check

I’ve located the Channels DVR setup page in my web browser - check

Now, I have a few questions:

  1. Is there a “suggested settings” screenshot that I can follow since I don’t know the purpose of many of the settings? It would be nice if each of the settings had an “info” icon that when hovered or clicked could give me a bit more info on the purpose of each and why I may or may not want to enable/disable it.

  2. What is the purpose of “Enable Remote Access”?

  3. Bonjour was checked by default so I’m guessing I should leave it checked. What happens if I uncheck it?

  4. “Detect Commercials” was checked by default. What does this do? Automatically remove commercials or just mark them so that I can visually skip with FF search?

  5. Deinterlacer “Blend or Linear”, which is preferred? Why would I want one vs the other? Default is set to “Blend” but my Channels app has it set to “Linear”.

  6. On the Channels app, my Guide does not go out past 3 hours from current time. Isn’t it suppose to be several days?

I’ll take a shot at some of your questions.

Appreciate the feedback and answers. Over lunch I went home and checked the DVR and it does appear that my guide data is there now. I’m guessing it just had not had time to download when I checked earlier.

For 3) Bonjour: It seems foundational to the DVR operation. I’m not certain why we even have an option to disable that. Why would we want to do that?

Agree regarding Bonjour. There are other ways to configure devices (ex static IP addresses) but Bonjour makes install and configuration much easier.

The option is there because we have been debugging bonjour issues on some NAS during the beta.

Curious myself on this one. Anyone?

Linear produces better results, but is also 2x more cpu intensive. The ATV can do linear no problem, but the DVR can be installed on a variety of NAS so we default to the less intensive Blend there. If you’re watching via the DVR web interface it usually on a small screen, so you probably wouldn’t see the difference anyway.

Thanks…just so I’m clear. Does this option have any effect on the content that is recorded and played back on the ATV?

No
