Channels 4.0 Beta

Ok I didn't watch recordings on my mobile device before...just got my ipad so was using it.

Why wouldn't we want to be prompted to delete a recording after watching it?

I do not want a prompt to delete recordings after watching as we have multiple users that watch the same show ... would hate someone to delete it before I watch it.

That's the experience on TVos to have a prompt right?

It's not a prompt to delete as much as it is the resource view of the content you're playing. But being available when you complete watching does allow for a quicker way to delete it, yes.

On tvOS it stays up when playback is started, on iOS it is dismissed. This was just a decision made a long time ago when we first built the iOS app. The disparity in experience is understood though.

New build out:

  • New: Kids Section - Mark where you want movies and shows to appear. You can have them show Library, Kids, or Both - Be sure you have the latest Channels DVR Server pre-release installed first!
  • Improved: Various bug and UI fixes

This release introduces a HUGE new feature for those of you out there with large libraries and kids.

We now have a first class Kids Section that you can control! Previously, Channels would automatically take anything tagged as "Children" and separate it from your library, with no way to control it.

You must have the latest pre-release of Channels DVR Server installed for this feature to work. Install that first.

Now, you have all the control. By default nothing is separated. But if you want a Kids Section, you can turn it on and have content only in the Kids Section, or only in your main library, or have them in both. This is a great way to clean up large libraries for browsing.

When you first turn on the Kids Section, you will be asked if you want Channels to pre-populate it for you. If you confirm, it will take any shows or movies it thinks are for kids, and set them to Kids only. It will only do this once per app. Afterwards, you can adjust the visibility for each movie and show to tell Channels whether to show it in just main library, just kids, or both.

What makes the Kids Section so great is not just that you have a dedicated place for all your Kids stuff, it means all that stuff is out of the main library. If you're like me, and have a lot of kids shows and movies, this is huge for browsing. No more cluttering up your library with the tons of kid content.

iOS: Since no one else has commented, is the 5 second'ish delay on the Welcome screen to be expected in the betas? Not trying to harp on this, but since it's a poor user experience, I just want to confirm if it is an issue or expected for now.

Welcome screen?

Any time the beta app starts up following a natural or forced background quit, I see this screen for about 5 seconds before I finally see my library.

Wow! I’ve NEVER seen that. Is anyone else seeing this?

I can reproduce this every single time. Full sequence of events: start app, I see the spinner for about 1/2 second, then the Welcome screen for about 5-6 seconds, then finally the app Settings screen.

Edit to add: And this is on the same network (home, not remote)

Edit 2: As mentioned in a previous post, this only started as of 3.18.146. I can install earlier builds and this issue doesn't occur

I see the same delay in iOS after force closing the app. Takes a few seconds to load. If I tap "search again" it will find my server a few seconds faster than if I don't interact with the screen at all. All on same home network, DVR is version 2020.04.01.0126 on a PR4100. iPhone is running Beta 4.1.1657.

Could you send a Diagnostic Log from the app after one of these instances of it happening? We can see what's going wrong.

Sent. I assume Other was the correct choice?

Yeah — any of the options is fine. They do the same thing.

This appears to be a regression related to some recent changes I made to make things more reliable.

It looks like in cases where Hairpin NAT is not working that it prematurely fails discovery and displays this for a moment while it retries. It should not be failing so quickly and should be giving the system a chance to discover locally.

I'll see what I can do to handle this case more gracefully. Thank you for reporting it! It helps to get these things fixed before they are released more widely.

Am I missing something with the kids section? I had it populate the shows automatically but when I select “Kids” it doesn’t give me an option to view all kids material.

I have:

  • Recently Watched
  • Recently Added
  • Kids Shows

Where is the option to view all?

I tried turning enhanced off/on but I can’t seem to find how to view all kids items in one view, similar to how the movie and tv sections are displayed when “enhanced” is turned off.

Did you ensure that you updated to the latest DVR prerelease before updating the tvOS/iOS beta?

I’m on 2020.04.01.0126

The kids section doesn’t have buttons like that in it. With a smaller subset of content, It’s more simplified. It’s working like normal.

You think you’ll need them?

I wasn’t looking for buttons, I just assumed when I have enhanced turned off, that when I select the kids menu, it would just open to an alphabetical list of all kids shows and movies. Similar to the way TV and Movies does for the other menus when enhanced is off.

I can’t speak for anyone else’s kids, but mine like the ability to go to one spot for all of their content. They don’t seem to care if movies and tv are all together.

Or, change “recently added” in the kids section to be titled “kids movies”. It will show the most recently added movies with a blank tile at the end to open to all kids movies. Change “recently recorded” in the kids section to “kids tv”. It will show the recently recorded kids tv shows with the blank tile at the end to open to an alphabetical list of all kids tv shows that have been recorded.
