Channels 5.0 for Apple TV has "1st gen" remote requirement?

I was wondering why Channels on my Apple TVs had not auto-updated to 5.0 yet.

I went to the tvOS App Store, went to Channels, and saw this:

(I have replaced the Siri Remote on my Apple TVs with the new one with the "control ring".)

When I clicked on the "cloud download" icon, I got this:

I confirmed this behavior on a second Apple TV as well.

What is the requirement for the "1st generation" remote?

If you hit "continue" , it will download. I've never owned a Gen 1 remote, with no issues whatsoever.

Right, I did click "Continue" on one of the Apple TVs and it seemed to work.

I'm just wondering if this "requirement" is what prevented Channels from auto-updating, or if I was just being impatient and it would have eventually auto-updated. (I'm not sure how often the Apple TV checks for new versions and downloads them.)

Nah, "automatic" updates on tvOS are pretty wonky - i find myself often having to trigger even days or weeks-old updates for many apps.

OK, good to know. It's pretty rare that I care about a version update on a tvOS app, and I was surprised to see I was still running 4.5.11 when I checked this morning.

The App Store started this last year. It’s stupid.

We USE the motion feature of the 1st gen remote, so the App Store has translated that to it being required.

This is false.
