I’m looking into becoming a cord cutter and am wondering if anybody knows if I can bypass having to get an HDHomerun and can just have a DirecTV Now subscription and using that subscription in the Channels app? I really like the look of the Channels app and usability, look of the guide, dvr, and the fact you can rewind and fast forward. If I can’t bypass having the HDHomerun does anybody know if I can use the DirecTV Now subscription on the HD Homerun instead of an antenna for OTA channels or getting a cable card? Thank you in advance!
No. DirecTV Now is an internet only service. Channels does require either Over the Air (Antenna) TV service or a Cable provider, using a HDHomerun to stream and capture the service.
I use both. I leverage DirecTV now and it’s basic package to cover channels I can’t get OTA. (CNN, ESPN), and just watch those live or use their Apps. I also heavily use the Network Channel Apps (Disney, TBS, etc…) on my AppleTV heavily. I pay for a direct subscription for HBO via HBO Now and use that app.
Cord free, and loving it. I find any Network Channel that has an app, I leverage those apps and the AppleTV TV App more an more. Channels is my preferred DVR, and in the case of watch live new or sports DirecTV NOW.
For what it’s worth…
Unfortunately not Channels only supports the HDHomeRun.
