Channels DVR Server Platform Updates for 2025

Thanks!

Is there still a need to do the DB backup and restore as the migration instructions say? I'd assume so, because you'd have to load the Channels server for Windows on the new Beelink mini.

No, since you’re just bringing your data with you.

Just install Channels DVR Server and use the restore feature and point at the data on the hard drive, using the documentation provided.

Does this affect users running ChannelsDVR in a docker container?
Edit: Sorry re-read the doc and Linux is still supported!

I know some government computers and...let's just say a major transportation company... that are not that far off!

I’m a little confused…the article seems like Linux is not going to continue to be supported like in the past…is that true?
I get the FreeBSD and Pi4 stuff….but will LINUX continued to be supported like macOS and Windows?

Of course it will. Nothing about Linux was even mentioned in this announcement.

This was about changes in platform support.

In fact, the article says

The discontinuation of FreeBSD includes the discontinuation of support for FreeNAS, aka TrueNAS CORE.
We suggest TrueNAS CORE users migrate to TrueNAS SCALE, which is based on Linux and can run the Linux version of Channels DVR Server or Docker.

and

What platform should I move too?

  • Intel n95 based mini PC running Linux - Incredible value for hosting Channels DVR Server or any other self hosted services.

This is unfortunate, I use the Raspberry Pi image, and installation took all of 5 minutes, and that included opening the Pi box. It’s the most stable device I’ve ever used, and consider a DVR server an appliance - not going to spend hundreds of dollars for a computer to do this. I am glad that I have time to look elsewhere before my subscription renews. I expect, based on the announcement, that they will be updated the client app soon after to degrade performance enough to make people switch.

Great news, you don’t have to. Simply install pi os and install the dvr server on it. Doesn’t cost you a penny.

You lose transcoding. The new linux image does not support it. This was an important feature to me.

If that is truly the case it seems like a reasonable feature request for them to enable hardware transcoding for the pi running the dvr on pi os. I don’t use a pi for my server personally because it’s way under powered for my taste anyway. I use them for other projects thought. @tmm1 @eric

I'm disappointed by this announcement as well. I also use a Raspberry Pi 4 with the custom channels image. It has been rock solid reliable for me for over three years now. I do not have any desire or intention to migrate as I view my Channels DVR as an appliance.

No doubt there is now more powerful hardware available at lower price points than in 2021 so I wouldn't necessarily build a NEW DVR server using a Raspberry Pi but I don't like dropping support either. I will likely keep it as is until support is dropped and then evaluate my options before renewal is due in August.

I also recall there being a strong note that the custom image was preferable to running Raspbian because the custom image ran off a bootable HDD. There was concern of burning out a microSD card (on which Raspbian was installed) from the frequent library/guide updates and lack of wear leveling algorithm.

There are many tutorials out there showing how to run pi os from an attached ssd or hdd instead of the card.

Yes, we didn't do anything special. The Pi can just do this.

You can simply flash your drive with Raspbian the same way our Pi Image was flashed.

This is kind of confusing as mentioning "new minimum requirements" first makes it easy for the eyes to skim over the "for these platforms", which I imagine is supposed to convey "if you're part of this group, then these are your options", but then your options should also include Linux, too, since this also includes sunset platforms like BSD and RPi that you'll have to completely migrate from.

Our new minimum requirements for Channels DVR Server for these platforms are:

Windows 10 & up
macOS 11 (Big Sur) & up

If you flash the Pi with Linux, you also need to?

  1. Install Chrome
  2. Install Hardware transcoding code
  3. Create a drive for a USB external

This article isn't clear on what windows server versions will still be supported.

I have had channels since the launch im disappointed that your not going to support the Pi. Please reconsider this.

So I'm affected by the EOL with my trusty ole 2011 iMac 27". Time to go anyway, nothing is supported anymore. I have an external SSD drive that houses my time machine backups and my channels folders. After I setup my new Imac I will connect my existing SSD drive to my new computer for time machine backup will channels be active right away?

Simply just follow the migration documentation and you'll be fine.

It will be as simple:

  1. plug in your old drive to the new computer
  2. install Channels DVR Server
  3. Set up with the restore option and pointing it at your drive and correct folder/backup

Just be sure you accept the permission requests from macOS for Channels DVR Server to have the ability to access the local network and external drives.
