Channels DVR shopping list

Hi everyone,

I registered to find about what I need to have Channels DVR working on an Apple TV.

This is what I currently have:

  • Synology DS215+ (Alpine AL-212 1.4Ghz Dual Core + 1 Gig RAM)(always On)
  • Lenovo M73 Thinkcenter Windows 7 64 bits (Core i5 4570T 2.9Ghz, Intel HD 4600 + 4 Gig RAM)(Always On)
  • 1 gigabit wired network.

I’m planning to purchase:

  • Apple TV 4K
  • HD Homerun quatro tuners HDHR5-4US(CA)
  • Channels DVR subscription

Here is my plan:

I would like to run Channels on the Apple TV and have either the Synology NAS or the Lenovo to run Channels DVR and recording to the NAS.

My concerns are that I’m not sure if the DS215+ is powerful enough to handle the simultaneous recording or streams (up to 3 or 4) I will have or if the Channels PVR for Windows will be compatible with my Apple TV?

What would be your best advice?

TIA

The DVR engine can run on either the Synology or Windows. Your Apple TV will be able to connect to either.

Your Synology is fine for multiple recordings, but it will be very slow during commercial detection, and cannot be used for away from home transcoding.

I'd recommend using the Lenovo if that's already hardwired and always-on. The DVR will run very well on an i5.

Thanks a lot for the answer; much appreciated.

I have other questions if you don't mind answering.

What's happening in case of a power failure when running from Windows, if auto logon is enabled? Is there a setting into the DVR setting panel to start the DVR service at Windows launch or I must do something else?

And just to confirm, I shouldn't expect any lags when running the DVR service from Windows and recording on the NAS, right?

Otherwise, I'm pretty much set and go ahead with my subscription.

Regards,

If Windows is set to auto-login, the DVR will start automatically.

If you plan to run the service on Windows but still record to the NAS, just make sure everything is hardwired Ethernet with cat6e.

I'm all set and thanks for the great advices.

Looking forward using Channels!

Thanks again!
