Channels suddenly can't find HDHomerun

I have 2 Apple TVs, one that is wired and one wifi. The wired one hasn’t lost the connection to the HDHR but the app on wifi can’t find the tuner. It shows up on the my.hdhomerun interface and all seems fine. Tried reseting the ATV and HDHR but no luck.

Any thoughts?

Are you sure it’s on the right wifi network?

You can try “Add Tuner Manually” and entering its ip address

Thanks for the reply. Yes it is on the correct wifi network.

I tried the manual ip and it still wouldn’t work.

Oh and the ATV is getting a valid ip and connected to the internet. All other apps work fine.

Not sure. Sounds like packets from the ATV are not making it to the hdhomerun for some reason.

I unplugged the ethernet cable from the HDHR and it seems to be working now. Strange.

Thanks for the input.

I had the same thing happen. Finally got it all working again after firmware up grades to my Apple airport time capsule and Airport express. The apps seem to lose the HDhomerun if the IP address get changed after set up.

SD non tech tuners cannot have a static address, but If you can, set a reservation on your router for the mac address of the SD tuner. This would make sure that the tuner always gets the same IP address from the dhcp server/router that the software is expecting it to be on. Also set a long lease time (at least 7 days, if not 30 or 180)

Try scanning your network again on the Settings tab. That should pick up the IP change.

You can also always restart the app if it’s acting up. Click the TV/Home button on the remote twice and swipe up.

Channels app won’t play the channels. Neither of my AppleTVs will show the broadcasts. Both see the homerunHD. In the guide they show what they should be showing, but nothing will play. I can watch the broad cast on my iMac on the same wireless network. I have rescanned for channels. I have restarted the AppleTV, both from the menus and unplugging. I have restarted the channels app. I deleted and reinstalled the channels app. InstaTV app also is having the same problem.

Info on one of my AppleTVs
Channels 2.1.10
HDHomerun Extend 105439C6
AppleTV A1625 (64 GB)
iOS 10.1 (14U593)

What does it say when you try to play a channel?

Sounds like something’s going on with your wifi network maybe? You can try restarting your router perhaps.

Just a black screen and a spinning wheel. My iMac is on the same wireless network. It is playing the broadcasts fine.

A spinning wheel means it’s waiting for video data and none is arriving.

Can you try on the Settings tab changing the transcoder to Heavy or Mobile to see if that makes any difference?

Reset airport and airport express. Now working. Thanks. I figured if the iMac was working then the wireless was fine. But resetting worked. Will be upgrading to eero in a few days. Maybe that will help too.

I tried changing the transcoding too. That didn’t work. My airport is an older flat model, so that may be the culprit. Since Apple is backing out of wifi I’m switching to eero. I had to wait till I would mess up work while switching.

Crazy, I have exactly the same setup and the same problem.

The ethernet connected ATV (v4) always has access to the HDHR3-US Dual, never had any issues.

Recently introduced a second ATV over wireless (A/C). Channels found the HDHR right away and access was fine, few streaming dropouts as expected over WiFi, but generally very watchable (better than my antenna in that location).

But after a few days, the wireless ATV started reporting “HDHomeRun” unavailable when selecting a channel. Restarting the app didn’t help. Restarting the ATV would, although usually only for a short time (a few minutes). Restarting the HDHR didn’t help. Restarting the router (Arris Surfboard SBG6700-AC) would help, again for a limited time.

As with your situation, all other apps and functions of the wireless ATV seem fine, has internet access during these times.

One note when I first setup this wireless ATV it offered to update the firmware on the HDHR, which I did (to 20161117). I wish I had not, to see if this issue might be related…

I haven’t had an issue with mine for 3 weeks now.

As mentioned I unplugged the ethernet cable from the HDHR and rebooted it. Then plugged the cable back in and it seemed to fix everything. Channels hasn’t lost connection since.

I had the same problem. All my AppleTVs are connected over wifi. None of them have a direct ethernet connection. After up grading my Apple routers to eero I have not had the issue recur. I was a little hesitant about switching away from the Apple AirPorts, I hate wasting time playing IS support at home, but the eero set up was more Apple like than their own AirPorts.

For users on apple wifi, we’ve heard that using 5ghz works to find HDHR but using 2ghz does not. Very strange…
