Channels tvOS - Tuner Sharing Not Working

Not sure if I am the only one experiencing this, but it appears that I am unable to get Channels for Apple TV to properly share tuners with those that Channels DVR is actively using for recording.

Vital Stats:

  • Apple TV is running Channels v3.2.7
  • Two tuners are available on the local network, one HDHomeRun Connect and one HDHomeRun Extend; both running 20180817 firmware
  • Tuner Sharing is enabled in the Channels application settings

I am able to confirm that the tuner is not correctly being shared by setting Channels DVR to record two programs on OTA channels simultaneously, and then selecting a show currently being recorded from the guide and selecting the “Watch Live” option. I then open the hdhomerun_config_gui application on my laptop to monitor the tuners being used, and I can see that three tuners are being used instead of the two. When I exit back to the guide screen from the Apple TV, one of the in-use tuners drops out, confirming that the ATV is tying up a second tuner slot instead of sharing the one already being used by the DVR.

I’m unsure as to whether this is an HDHomeRun firmware regression (I just recently updated the firmware), or if this is a Channels bug, but I noticed that I was missing some recordings today as a result of the issue, which is what led me to investigate.

Edit: As a troubleshooting measure, I’ve manually power cycled the tuners to see if this makes a difference, and will update this thread if the issue is resolved by the forced restart.

The DVR Log should show more detail. If the apps are using different extend transcoder settings then they may not be able to share a tuner.

I have pulled the logs for the relevant issue as it appears to have occurred again today. For simplicity, here are the programs that are supposed to be recorded, alongside their start times and durations. Programs have 1 minute pre- and post- recording buffers unless otherwise noted:

1700 - 1800 hrs:

  • The Closer - PSIP 2.2
  • Action News 4 - PSIP 4.3
  • Channel 11 News at 5 - PSIP 11.1

1800 - 1830 hrs:

  • Action News 4 - PSIP 4.3
  • Channel 11 News at 6 - PSIP 11.1

1830 - 1900 hrs:

  • ABC World News Tonight With David Muir - PSIP 4.3 (with 30 minute recording overrun to 1930 hrs)
  • NBC Nightly News With Lester Holt - PSIP 11.1 (with 30 minute recording overrun to 1930 hrs)

1800 - 1900 hrs:

  • The Closer - PSIP 2.2

1900 - 1930 hrs:

  • CBS Evening News with Jeff Glor - PSIP 2.1 (with 30 minute recording overrun to 2000 hrs)
  • Action News 4 - PSIP 4.4

1900 - 2000 hrs:

  • The Closer - PSIP 2.2

With the overruns set as they are for these programs, I would expect the first minute or so of either the CBS Evening News or Action News 4 recordings starting at 1900 hrs to be cut off, since I only have four tuners worth of capacity, and the 1830-1900 news programs would mean that five tuners are being requested from 1900-1901. The CBS Evening News does start its recording a minute late as expected, but the Action News 4 program at 1900 hrs does not get recorded at all, which is not expected behavior.

Looking at the logs, it appears that Channels DVR elects to open another tuner stream for the 1900 hrs recording of The Closer on PSIP 2.2, instead of sharing the tuner stream as it appears to have done in the logs for the prior hour – compare log line 65 against log line 12 to see the discrepancy. For some reason, the DVR is not detecting an existing stream tuned to the same channel and sharing it.

Additionally, there are other log lines that don’t seem to make sense – log line 17 says it is “Sharing existing connection to 1043F1BD for ch11.1”, when log lines 2, 5, 12, and 14 indicate that this device has remained tuned to 2.2 and 4.3 through the prior hour and has not re-tuned to 11.1. Perhaps this indicates that the DVR software is incorrectly tracking (or perhaps logging) the tuner state, leading to its opening a new tuner stream when not necessary?

I think I know what’s happening. If you refresh the web UI a few times, do your HDHRs switch orders in the list of tuners?

I can confirm that I am seeing the tuners switch places after an arbitrary number of refreshes – it took about 6-7 refreshes for me to get the Connect and Extend tuners to switch places, but it did eventually occur.

This should be fixed in the latest DVR per-release build. To update hold down SHIFT and click Check for Updates

Note that to get the Channels app to share tuners with the DVR, both the app and the DVR must have your HDHRs prioritized in the same order. This is because the tuner sharing is per device, so if the app tries to tune 11.1 on your EXTEND but the DVR is using 11.1 from your CONNECT, it won’t be able to share the stream.

You can adjust your tuner priorities on the Settings tab of the app for live tv, and on the settings web UI of the DVR for recordings.
