Whenever I have serveral 30 second skip forward processes on an IPhone client my IPhone pauses after about the first two or three skips and spins for several seconds before making the next skip. Is this a function of the "client buffer". Would setting the "Client Buffer" to a higher value help with this issue? Is there something different that I should do?
It is most likely related to your network, and the pauses are because the client has to wait for the server to send the new segments.
Wireless network connections often don't have the low latency to consistently deliver lag-free seeking, especially with high-bandwidth streams like OTA TV.
The client buffer setting on the DVR web page only affects the browser web player.
In the apps the buffer is about 90s, so the first three 30s skips would be very quick. After that it has to download from your DVR server.
You can try the beta app with Settings > Debug > HLS when Efficient turned on and it may be a better experience.
Would auto-skip work better; assuming that the commericials are split out correctly.
+1 for what @racameron said. It's your network or channels server network interface or something like that. I have android phones and an iPad and both can skip around at will without any issues whatsoever. The other day I mistakenly started a movie from the beginning instead of resuming at the 45min mark. I did 30sec skip 90times and it didn't miss a beat. Do a speed test from the client to your server and see what the latency and download is.
