I have the latest Android app on my phone. I get CC on my Fire Stick, I get CC on my phone with WiFi from my local router.
However, I can't get CC on my phone when using Cell Data. I start playing a program. Press "..." menu. A menu comes up with:
"Closed Captions", "Audio Language", and "Options",
I select "Closed Captions". A box appears in the center of the screen saying "Closed Captions". I get no closed captions. The box stays there until I clear it.
Any Ideas?
On your phone app change settings,playback, streaming quality, change all of them to original. The server isn’t transcoding them and by changing these to original the server skips transcoding.
That solved one problem and created another. I set the quality low so I would not run out of HotSpot Data when I am away from home for long periods of time, with lots of video's playing. A lot of times, I would be okay with Audio Only to save data, but as far as I know, this feature is not available under Android.
Why are Closed Captions lost during transcoding?
I don’t know. I’m sure it could be fixed if the devs wanted to take a deep dive into it but I doubt it’s high on their to do list.
Maybe raise the away from home bitrate or try software transcoding on your server.
The bit rate is low because I need to conserve my cell data. I tried software transcoding and the closed captions came back. What am I loosing by using software transcoding?
Software transcoding uses your CPU and hardware transcoding uses your GPU.
You'll see higher CPU usage on your server running software transcoding.
What is your away from home bitrate set to?
Right now it is set to 1Mbps, but at times, I have set it to 700k.
What good is having a GPU if I can't use it?
You can ask the developers if they can support closed captions using hardware transcoding at such low bitrates.
