Comcast and MPEG-4

I have received a couple of letters now from Comcast informing me of their transition to MPEG-4 video encoding. The letter states to check to see if you equipment will be compatible with and MPEG-4 stream. It appears the HD Prime box is, but I just have a few questions. Please correct me if my assumptions are wrong.

  1. It’s my understanding that the HDHOMERUN Prime “puts” the video signal onto you internal home network. The “Channels” app picks up this signal to display to us via the app. Is this an MPEG-2 stream from the HDHOMERUN?

  2. If it is an MPEG-2 stream, with the HDHOMERUN Prime now put out the video stream on the network as an MPEG-4 stream? With the “Channels” app have an issue accessing this stream?

Again, my assumptions on how this works could be off, but I hoping it will all be converted to MPEG-4 so that it may help with network performance, or accessing “Channels” via a VPN.

Thanks for any clarification!

The mpeg4 streams will work without issue. Comcast has already switched many of my channels over and I didn't even notice.

The mpeg4 channels definitely use a lot less bandwidth, which means I can buffer 4h+ in Channels now. They would work better over VPN as well.

You can check for channels marked "AVC" on your PRIME's lineup page to see which ones have been converted.

Awesome! Thanks for the quick reply!
