Comcast and Remote Access Problems

I have just switched from AT&T Uverse to Comcast Internet. My DVR remotely, web UI and Through the iOS App, worked fine on ATT. However, I am unable to connect to either when I switch the network to comcast.

My setup. I have a standalone mode which connects to my own Wireless router. I have bridged the router to the att equipment or comcast modem. On comcast I have full internet access and service.

On the local network I attached to WebUI and can verify that the DVR software is listening on the new comcast IP address. If I switch back it switches back to the old ATT Ip address and works. But with the comcast IP address I cannot connect remotely to the web UI. Internally the IP address of the DVR does not change because it is coming from the Router.

I can also verify that I can remotely, SSH or ScreenSharing, access the DVR computer via comcast or ATT network.

Is there something that needs to be reset on the DVR when I switched to Comcast?

Oh, I also verified that I could telnet remotely to the Comcast IP address and Port 8089 to rule out comcast blocking that port.

Is the Comcast modem just a modem: ie: you own it? Or do you have a modem/router combo as Comcast would rent out to customers?

You said your wifi router is bridged to the modem, which would not normally be possible since the modem has a public IP. It must be a modem/router combo. Due to this, you need to redo the port forwarding on the Comcast modem/router, and forward those ports to your wifi router.

I am also using Comcast. Here is my config:

  • Modem is a Netgear CM1000 Docsis 3.1: coax goes into the modem. ethernet out to Ubiquity EdgeRouter.
  • Router is Ubiquity EdgeRouter ER-X. eth0 is internet in via ethernet: a public IP in from the modem. eth1-eth4 combined to switch0. switch0 has internal LAN IP. All ports that need to access internal servers are forwarded on the EdgeRouter. A separate gigabit switch is connected to eth1 on the EdgeRouter.
  • Netgear ProSafe GS116NA: this gigabit switch connects via eth1 on the EdgeRouter. Wired network devices are connected to this switch. Also have a WiFi access point connected here.

It is a modem that I purchased. Not renting from comcast. Maybe I misspoke about the whole bridging thing. The router does not need to reconfigure the port forwarding. I had a domain registered to my DVR before Channels setup their own ssl certs. That domain is working and I can get to my DVR via my own domain on Comcast. On ATT I could use BOTH the channels domain and my domain to get to my DVR. I validated this by changing my domain to point to Comcast public IP. and then Changed it back when I reverted to ATT. I have both services right now as I verify that all my services on ATT work with Comcast before I turn off ATT.

Do you think I need to reinstall the channels DVR so it can recreate the ssl cert for Comcast?

Are you testing from inside your own network or outside your network? When I’m inside my network (also Comcast) I can’t get the channels domain to resolve and connect to my DVR, but I can from outside my network.

The ssl cert is linked to a domain name, not an IP address.

I don’t use the channelsdvr.net domain name to access my DVR, so I haven’t tested this. But the channelsdvr domain must be doing some kind of DDNS updating to link it to your public IP. Did you try stop/starting the remote DVR service after connecting the Comcast modem?

From outside my network. I use my cell phone to test the iOS app and then web App. Also, I have tried from a coffee shop as well.

I will try the restarting to see if that makes a difference.

That appeared to be the fix. It took a couple a toggles of the switch for it to stick. But it is working again. Thanks @djcastaldo

No problem. You will probably have to do the same thing again if your Comcast IP changes (it is issued from the ISP via DHCP).

Toggling the remote access checkbox will refresh the IP associated with your remote access domain name.
