Commercial Detection question

I just set up this app on my Qnap and have Commercial Detection enabled from the control panel. I've recorded a few test shows but they are showing the commercials. Is there anything else I need to do to have the software remove the commercials? Or does the commercial deletion take some time after the recording is complete?

Thanks

Commercial detection is run after the recording is completed. You can look at the web UI settings page and it will show you what is being viewed, recorded, and commercial detected. Also, commercial detection is the most compute intensive part of the process. Its also done in a non destructive way.

Hi, as @pdaphone mentioned, the DVR Server can detect and mark commercials if requested but the original file is left untouched and the commercials are not deleted, instead after a recording has finished then commercial detection starts and may run 2 mins to 30 mins+ depending on the hardware of the server and depending on how long the original recording is. I believe the commercial detection creates an EDL file. When the recorded show is played in the Channels client then the client uses the original recording and supplemental EDL file to give the user options on how to handle commercials.

Commercial detection does not remove any parts of the recording, it just creates markers as to where the commercials might be. After the program ends, the scan for commercials will start. The time it takes depends on the speed of your machine and what else is going on. Mine now takes about 5 minutes per hour of recording, since I upped the number of threads used to 2.

You can set your playback to auto skip or manual skip. Manual skip waits until you press FF or SKIP on your remote.

The settings screen will tell you when the scan is happening.

Thanks @TV_Ken my settings only has a checkbox for the commercial detection, where do I define auto or manual? Also, where did you up the threads to 2?

In the client settings under playback.

To set the commercial detection threads, go to the web page on the server and check the box for Commercial Detection, then if you have a recent copy of the server software you will then get an option to choose the number of threads. My server DVR is on Windows 10 - not sure this has yet been implemented on all versions of the DVR software so it may or may not be available on all NAS.

The DVR server is the same across all platforms. However, the option in the web UI to adjust the number of threads for commercial detection is only available on a prerelease version.

@BabaLooey What device/platform are you using for playback? The setting for Manual/Auto skip is in the Channels app settings on iOS/tvOS/Android.

Plex on a Roku tv

You have to use our app, Channels.

We are neither Plex, nor do we run on Roku.

Understood. I hope someday you will be on Roku since they are turning into one of the most dominant operating systems for televisions. I'm just curious, is the lack of support for Roku due to licensing costs or just general lack of personnel to develop on the platform?

In laymen’s terms, Roku sucks. For a more technical explanation, search the forums, Maddox explains why Roku sucks in a more thought out , professional manner than me saying that Roku sucks.

Agree. The more technical issue I think is they want to not do transcoding on the streaming box to keep things snappy, and the Roku architecture forces transcoding and lacks the CPU power to do it.
