Commercial skip sometimes misses entire block of commercials

I’ve noticed lately that sometimes commercial skip will miss an entire block of commercials, yet it will catch all of the other segments in the same recording spot on. This seems to be more prevalent with the History channel. Just curious why it would miss the one segment and not the others. All of my recordings are via TVE if that matters…

There are two possibilities:

  1. The Comskip process did not find enough difference between the ads and surrounding actual content to flag the segment. This could be because there was a running ticker/chyron across the segment, or there was a station logo present, or any other myriad reasons. The Comskip program has never been 100% accurate, and stations continue to work to defeat this type of software.
  2. If Channels is using its newer automatic detection for this station, then the ads for that segment were likely coming from the same host and the HLS segments for the ads looked too similar to the content segments.

In short, commercial detection is imperfect, has always been imperfect, and will continue to be imperfect for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, this is a technical limitation you will have to accept.

Thanks for the explanation. I hope I didn’t come across as complaining as I’m amazed how well commercial skips generally works. I was more of less trying to get a better understanding of how it works… :grinning:
