Commercial skipping sometimes takes much longer

I’ve noticed that many times commercial skipping is very quick and other times it takes much longer. Is this normal?

Some channels use smart ad detection which is instant. Others have to scan the video to look for channel logos.

Yes it is, some tve channels use channels algorithm to auto mark the commercials based on the change in the feed source. This results in near instant detection with no hardware resources used. Other channels use comskip which takes longer and uses more hardware resources.

Yes. If you mean actual comskip, not the smart commercial detection that does not use comskip but is its own thing that works super fast.

TVE comskip is much slower with the mpeg4 video than it is with the mpeg2 video from OTA HDHR recodings.

You can search the forums here there are various threads about comskip performance on various hardware's. If you have a low end or weak cpu, (like with the RPi4) it will take much longer than says a system with a i7 quad core.

Also if you are recording atsc3 channels then the detection will take much longer. Atsc1 recordings are really fast with my 8 core proc (like 2min for an hour show). The same length show on atsc3 will take like 30+ min.

I should have been more clear that I was referring to commercial skip in the UI, not background processing. Sometimes, it will be a very quick blip when skipping commercials, while other times it will seemingly freeze on a frame for about 4 to 5 seconds before the skipping completes. Not a big deal, just curious why and if this is normal. I would think that regardless of which detection scheme is used, that once the frames are marked it shouldn’t make any difference from within the UI. All of my content is streamed via TV Everywhere with Channels running on my MacBook Pro 2017.

Is your DVR on WiFi? Might be contributing to the issue.

It’s hardwired over gigabit Ethernet. Again, it’s working great, I just wondered why most times it’s lightening quick, while others it takes 4-5 seconds.

What client devices do you see it on.
(Hope you don't mind me changing the Title)

It happens on all of my client devices. iPad Pro, iPhone 12, Apple TV 4K.

Common point would be your server. You might want to take a look to make sure you dont have a failing hard drive, network errors etc.

I have seen this rarely on my shield tv. For me it seems to happen after multiple skip forwards that land near the marker. Perhaps you could submit diagnostics from the client right after it happens and post here when you do.

I don’t think this is related to my setup as I noticed that watching a 60 minute recording resulted in approximately 3 out of 4 commercial skips being extremely fast (less than 1 second) and the other few were around 6-7 seconds. I tested it again and the results were the same both in time and place…
