Comskip vs PlayonTV Adskip

Anyone know what PlayOnTV uses for its AdSkip? Doesn't look like they use Comskip as for the few shows/movies I've compared, PlayOnTV's AdSkip is more accurate than Comskip. I've found that Comskip will incorrectly mark commercials. I've looked at the ini file that CDVR uses for Comskip and it's pretty aggressive, so maybe I can tweak the ini file settings.

PlayOn Cloud tags commercials within its own service, and then embeds those markers directly into the video container. Likely it uses something similar to Channels own ad detection for certain TVE streams: noting when the stream source changes from the network website/CDN to a different server for ad insertion.

In short, Comskip has no real bearing on tagged PlayOn items, unless you choose to manually redetect commercials.

I find comskip is not always reliable. We record House Hunters and many times it misses a commercial or it’s off by a few seconds. As a result I don’t want it to be automatic. I may need to manually backup/skip forward.

You may want to check your logs. If you record House Hunters from TVE, I believe you are not using Comskip; however, if it is from a cable source, it will use Comskip.

(The former is most akin to PlayOn, the latter is the classic Comskip scenario. In either case, perfection is impossible, although the former tends to be more accurate.)

(In the logs, Comskip detection will be prefixed with [DVR], while the TVE source-based detection will be prefixed with [ADS].)

Good to know. In my case it’s from TVE via YTTV subscription.

On an unrelated question I also have. HDHomerun Flex that gives me local channels. Unfortunately CBS and NBC are DRM so that’s a problem.

My issue is PBS seems to have a very minuscule audio sync issue. I don’t have this issue with TVE channels. Any thoughts?

PlayOnTV AdSkip removes the commercial from the recording. If it gets it wrong and removes content, it's gone. Channels Comskip marks commercials so it there is an error, you can back up and watch the skipped content.

PlayOn marks the Ads, they don’t cut them.
You can re-detect PlayOn in Channels (Comskip) and then Edit if necessary.
