I apologize for the lengthy message, but this required a detailed explanation.
First and foremost, I'm truly a novice. I realize that Channels DVR is geared to those with far more computer experience than myself. I managed (with some difficulty and some help from the nice folks at Channels) to get a Raspberry Pi 4 up and running with Channels DVR last year (approx. 10 months ago). For the most part, it's been working reliably (with an HDHomeRun tuner and TV Everywhere). I'm confused about the transition on 5/1, but I'll save that for another time. It's my understanding that I'll be able to continue using my Raspberry Pi 4 setup, but may eventually need to move to a mini-PC. To reiterate, I'm a true novice, so the migration process confuses me. For now, at least, I'm running out of space on my existing hard drive and assumed that the Raspberry Pi image (that I originally used) will no longer be available as of 5/1. That's an assumption on my part. Perhaps I'm wrong about that? As a precaution, I decided to prepare another hard drive for use with the Raspberry Pi. I'm using the same exact laptop that I used last year. It's an old Windows 8 laptop that I basically never use. I rely mostly on a smart phone (as I'm intimidated by computers and it's not essential that I use one). I was able to access the Raspberry Pi Imager (v1.8.5) that I used successfully last year. I have a brand new hard drive in an enclosure. It seemed that everything was fine. I filled in the "Raspberry Pi device", the "operating system" (64 bit) and the hard drive appeared in the "storage" section. Everything seemed fine until I got the following error message: "Error downloading: schannel: next InitializeSecurityContext failed: SEC_E_CERT_EXPIRED (0x80090328) - The received certificate has expired. - Server IP: 2a00:1098:84:1e0::3". I'm unable to do anything further. Unfortunately, I don't have access to another computer. I didn't anticipate a problem, since this same process worked fine last year. My intention was to use this new hard drive in the very near future and (hopefully) be able to continue using the Raspberry Pi 4 at least for a while. I desperately need help to try to successfully image the new hard drive. How can I fix, resolve or even bypass this error message (hopefully)? Thank you very much in advance!
It’s all in here
As far as the image error, try downloading the image and then use the imager to create from the local file.
(Sorry about the edits. My typing and brain aren’t working together today)
As I mentioned, I'm a novice when it comes to computers! All of that verbiage, and all that was needed was a reboot of the laptop! It worked fine after that! I'm still confused as to why I got that error message in the first place, but this was a perfect example of how a simple reboot can solve problems!
One remaining question (at least for now). Will I have any issues switching between my two hard drives? For example, I connect the new drive, but later on want to watch some of the recordings on my original hard drive. Then switch bavk to the new one. Is switching between these two hard drives going to create any problems for me? I'm assuming no, but I would prefer not to assume. I would prefer a definitive answer (I suppose ideally from a Raspberry Pi 4 user who's actually done this or from the staff at Channels). Thanks very much!
As long as you shut the Rpi down before switching the SD card/Hard drive you should be fine. I do that with my Tinker Board all the time. The only issues would be with file paths if you are using other external storage devices. If the CDVR is self contained on the storage you are switching between, you should be fine.
On a side note, if you are switching to a larger SD card, you can clone the smaller one with tools on the Raspbian OS. There are many tutorials on the pi forums about how to do it and expand the filesystem after you are done. That way you can keep all your files.
Thanks! I'm not using memory cards. Only hard drives that have the Raspberry Pi image.
I would be switching between a 4TB hard drive and an 8TB hard drive. I've collected a ton of shows & movies that I haven't had an opportunity to watch yet. My goal is to disconnect the 4TB hard drive and use the new, 8TB one for new recording purposes.
Then, from time to time, I'd like to switch back to the older one to watch some older recordings. I'm leaving approx. 500-700GB on the older one, to facilitate some recordings (just in case). I just wanted to make sure that I won't have problems doing this. I would completely shut down the Raspberry Pi prior to making the switch.
Are there any warnings that I need to know about prior to doing this?
I was also wondering if there's any type of enclosure (or perhaps an NAS, but that would be more expensive) that would allow me to keep both drives together and simply switch back and forth between the two? It would be more convenient than physically changing the two hard drives repeatedly.
It may not be viable. It was just an idea.
Thanks again!
Admittedly, I have no idea how the image works on a Pi, but couldn't you just use a USB hub and connect both HDs to the Pi?
I wouldn’t recommend anything that could switch between the hard drives without properly shutting them down. If you don’t shut the pi down before swapping the drives, you could easily corrupt the data on them. CDVR runs scans on media and other processes in the background such as logs and backups. If it is not shut down before switching, you could easily booger it up.
You could add a second hard drive to the CDVR for extra storage if needed and still use your original image.
The only pita about having 2 usb hard drives on a pi 4 is they are all on a single controller, so your speeds would slow down at least some.
Thank you for your advice! Was I correct in my assumption that the image for the Raspberry Pi will no longer be available after 5/1/25?....or will it remain available?
Do I need to be very concerned about the upcoming lack of support for Raspberry Pi?
I'm confused about the "transcoding" issue, but I simply use Channels DVR with an HDHomeRun tuner and TV Everywhere at home. I'm not using it remotely (so far) but would definitely like to have that option available to me. Will I be unable to access my recordings remotely if I continue to use the Raspberry Pi? Are there other issues that can develop as a result of my continuing to use the Raspberry Pi as my server? Any and all details would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
The pi build is going away and will not be updated or supported. You can use the Linux build on the rpi 4. There are instruction on how to do it in the forums and on the main site. Transcoding is not supported on the Rpi 4. Since you are using it locally, you should not need transcoding. Linux ARM64 compatible DVR Will work on the Rpi 4.
Your new HD would be a good testing ground for the Linux CDVR install for you to see how it works for you and determine if it meets your needs. That way you don’t lose any data and have a fallback in case you aren’t happy with it. Good luck.
