Connect Shield remotely?

Trying to connect Shield remotely while staying with relatives via their wifi and this appears:

I said I was away from home, but it still seems to want to a local server? I got my phone connected via this same wifi, then a computer separately. Not sure how to get the shield past this.

Did you try opening that url on your phone?

Yeah, did that, but refused the connection.

Ended up connecting the Shield thru the phone hotspot, and got it to authorize through a slightly different IP address. Thank you for responding so quickly.

It’s a local IP listed but that’s just for authentication purposes to get you access to your remote server. I see that all the time and I exclusively run my Channels DVR system remotely.

As tmm1 is alluding to, did you actually try it? It should work on any device you attempt it on.

The caveat is that the phone (or other device you use to access that IP) must be on the same Wi-Fi network as the Android TV.

On some Wi-Fi networks (particularly hotel Wi-Fi) which prevent peer-to-peer access, the url is still inaccessible so using a hotspot works well.

We're looking into changing this auth flow to use a pincode like other apps do for easier setup.

Yes, did that, as tmm1 described with all devices on the same wifi network, but the phone was not able to get a webpage to validate, the connection was refused - I do not know why. As mentioned, we did get things validated via the phone when the Shield was connected directly to the phone's hotspot (with phone wifi disabled).

The current process is quite intuitive and I can't explain why it didn't work as intended on this device, but maybe a pincode would be a good idea.
