Connection Closed Bug

Having an issue with TVE-DTV ch6140 ESPN1. When watching from my android mobile app, the channel plays just fine. When watching from my chromecast with google tv channels app, the stream will play for anywhere between 2 to 7 minutes and then freeze. Log just says closed connection.

However on the chromecast when I tune to the channel and start recording, the channel keeps playing with no issue. It's like the chromecast is timing out and closing the connection when its not recording. Recording keeps the connection open. Help!!

I have an hdhomerun and do not have issues with those channels. I also tried another TVE-DTV ch6105 and it doesn't appear to have the same issues. Keeps playing even when not recording anything.

Weird. Were you streaming at home or remotely from the phone?

Streaming from home. Not remote. I've also set the web player up on my dvr host and it just plays espn1 for great lengths without hiccups. It's almost as if something in the chromecast was updated and messing something up. I even went into the android energy saving settings for the channels app and disabled that to no benefit. Extra strangeness that the app on my samsung android phone doesn't hiccup!

I've reproduced this on two different ccwgtv devices so its not just the one. Powercycled all of my network equipment and it still persists.

Logs showing really bad network connection between the CCGTV and DVR, with lots of timeouts and slow downloads.

Windows PC wired ethernet into a netgear R6700v2 router. Chromecast is connected via wifi and is 5 feet away.

I'm just telling you what I see

Maybe try the speed test in the app (Settings > Support) and see what that says?

I get that. Just providing some context to the network setup. Are there timestamps on the slow network? We had some issues last night with devices not connecting to our router but has seemed to settle out after I reset everything. Every so often I need to power cycle it. Speed test just now is 307.44 Mbit/s, 2.00 ms latency, and 0.48 ms jitter.

Hope its not the router flaking. Couple years old.

Lots of stuff like that. Not sure if that's during the known router issues or not.

Pinging wired devices in my network are less than 1 ms. Pinging that chromecast that's closest had 125 sent and 7 lost packets. Max time was 124ms and the average was 47. My other chromecast (upstairs and farther away) had similar ping times but no drops.

Sounds like I have some wifi issues but the upstairs chromecast is dropping espn too but not dropping packets. Argh....

What I'm seeing is active TCP connections are being randomly closed so yea there must be some severe packet loss intermittently to cause that to happen.

Issues that severe are quite likely due to interference. I recommend using your router to do a channel scan and make sure you’re using the least used channel (1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz), assuming you haven’t done that recently.

I'm the only 5 GHz I can pick up nearby. I'm sitting in a channel pocket for 2.4 as compared to my neighbors.

WiFi speed tests are starting to slow to 50-60 mbps vs 230 wired and we have had guests complain about timeouts on their devices tonight. News to me but clearly routers are known to flake out. Going to see if I can flash ddwrt on this device. May end up replacing this three year old unit. Thanks for the help!

Update: I putzed around with our wireless router for a while trying different settings and stuff. Was still getting random dropped packets when doing the -t ping (continuous ping). Replaced my wireless router and all of my issues have gone away. Just putting this here for prosperity. For my HDhomerun channels for a while were seeing behavior almost as if the channel would pause and then unpause quickly. It then progressed to TVE streams closing and further degradation of performance. Hope this helps someone in the future!
