My wife tried watching 20/20 that was recorded the other night on our Apple TV. She said it would constantly buffer on her, several times in the first 10 minutes of the recording until she finally just gave up on it. The file it created is only 3.72 GB, so it shouldn’t be taking that long to send over our network. Why would this be taking so much to watch? I am using an Airport Extreme Time Capsule for our network. Good strong signal in all extreme ends of our house.
I have the same problem. Is the Channels dvr reencoding the file on the fly? There should be no problem with my synology nas steaming these files directly, and an iPhone X should be able to play them back fine. When I watch live tv there doesn’t seem to be the buffering issue. I am in my home on Wi-Fi playing from a synology nas (ds416play).
Is the Channels app using the native ios player for playback? Or does it have its own player?
The native player in iOS is weakened by its limited codec support despite the hardware being capable of decoding just about any file you throw at it.
It’s one of the things that makes Plex unusable in a iOS/tvOS environment when the server is running on weaker hardware, like a nas.
No re-encoding; we have a custom player which plays the file directly.
