Content not streaming on ATV away from home

So I log into the app on AppleTV at my mom’s house, and the guide with all my DVR content from my house comes up….but anything I try to watch shows just a black screen with a constant loading circle at the bottom.

AppleTV is on Ethernet. I use WiFi on my iPhone in the same network….no issue. That tells me that nothing is wrong with my ChannelsDVR server or my firewall at my house, and nothing seems to be wrong with the LAN at my mom’s house. Same thing is happening on 2 AppleTV’s (both on Ethernet, at my mom’s house)

Hmm, one troibleshooting ingredient I'd include first. Temporarily unplug the Ethernet wire from the AppleTV(s) , and connect via WiFi instead, like your iPhone. Does it stream then?

I have not tried that, but on an Ethernet cable with the ATV, all other apps work fine?!

Getting Ethernet run throughout my mom’s house was a time consuming task, so I’d rather not but…..why would all other apps work?

The next time you experience this, please go to Settings -> Support -> Submit Diagnostic Logs from your Apple TV and let us know when it's been submitted so we can have a better idea of what was going on.

Since you say it's working on WiFi on your phone, I suggested it not as a permanent solution for the AppleTVs, but as a temporary troubleshooting step, in order to narrow down the variables of what works vs. what doesn't, that's all.

A few additional questions to help direct support:

  • Which model Apple TV?
  • Do any other apps on the Apple TV exhibit similar behavior? (Sorry, missed your second post.)
  • What are your remote streaming quality settings?
  • What is your home internet upload speed?
  • Are you using using native remote streaming or Tailscale?

(I also agree with attempting over wifi; it could help diagnose whether there is a bad cable or switch port mucking things up.)

Not using TailScale

I have no issues, even when I join my Tesla to my mom’s WiFi and stream from there.

Since it seems that bandwidth is not an issue, perhaps try selectively decrementing the remote bitrate setting and seeing how that affects things. (Is your phone also set to stream remotely at original quality?)

If that does not help the situation, I would think perhaps a bad cable might be a decent second avenue of investigation. (I had a device that worked for years, until its network services failed after a week or so like clockwork. I even swapped out network adapters, with the same result. When I decided to re-troubleshoot the problem after a year, and using a new cable, it has been rock solid. Cables fail, fact of life; it happens regardless of whether they're commercial, or you crimp them yourself.)

Fixed it.

On the AppleTV app at my mom’s house, internet streaming was set to 8mbps. I changed it to Original…presto

I have no idea why I didn’t look into that before.
