Corrupted Recordings from DS216+II

I’m having random issues with recorded shows to my DS216+II. Some recordings playback fine, but then after a few days running, I see corruption in recordings. Playing the same channel “Live” in Channels plays without glitches or issues, but playing recorded shows—or even "Watch from the Start"causes visual artifacts, skipping and jumping around. Seen it in several episodes of the Tonight Show, and many others.

Had this issue a few days ago, and ended up rebooting the Synology and it appeared to fix it…but it came right back.

Any ideas?

Just Stopped and Restarted the Channels DVR Package from the Synology Package Center, and the skipping kept happening. I rebooted the Synology completely, and now its working correctly again. Not sure what’s happening—but can’t reboot my Synology every 24 hours to keep the DVR from corrupting recordings. Let me know if you need any Logs to help identify the issue.

When I posted that suggestion, I was seeing log entries for the past several days…after rebooting it appears I only have log entries from today…not sure if there’s a way to see those other than the “Log” menu…I recall seeing some “Panic” entries.

Recordings playback correctly after the reboot? Or new recordings are okay?

What does the CPU and RAM section on the Settings tab show when the DVR is acting weird?

Any panic messages from the log would be useful. It is possible to get a larger log via http://x.x.x.x:8089/log?n=1000. Please email to [email protected]

Just emailed the larger logs and it does include the panic recovery.

The recordings are corrupted and won’t playback without skipping. The recordings that were skipping before the reboot resumed, and the portions after the reboot play smooth—but the first portion (and the missing portion during reboot are still skipping…so it appears to be corruption during record not playback).

(I also have a video of what the skipping, distortion looks like if that will help you…I can email it if you need it)

Nothing stands out in the log. Sounds like the NAS is getting overloaded; either CPU, RAM or disk can’t keep up. Would be useful to compare CPU/RAM stats when it’s working vs not.

This is quite high, you have two cores and the load is 4. Means CPU usage is at 200%

Thats quite odd…since the Synology shows me typical loads of about 10-20% CPU during regular usage.

I have the same synology, and have never seen load averages that high. In fact, I have never seen the DVR use more than one of the two cores.

Do you have something else running on the NAS?
