CPU Question

Anyone running this kind of CPU? I am interested in how slow transcoding is running:

CPU Model Intel Pentium D1508
CPU Architecture 64-bit
CPU Frequency Dual Core 2.2 GHz 2.2 (base) / 2.6 (turbo) GHz

I need to upgrade my NAS and one of the units I am interested in has this CPU which doesn’t have QuickSync but has everything else i need.

Like you said, it doesn’t support Quick Sync. If you’re buying something new, you should avoid anything that doesn’t have Quick Sync, since there are so many other options out there that do support it.

That cpu won’t be fast enough to transcode MPEG2 on it’s own. You’ll be hard pressed to find any NAS cpu that can transcode MPEG2 on its own, so you’ll want to make sure the included CPU supports Quick Sync.

Sounds like you’re looking at the ReadyNAS RN526X.

According to https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MfYoJkiwSqCXg8cm5-Ac4oOLPRtCkgUxU0jdj3tmMPc/edit#gid=314388488, Plex is able to transcode 1080p on that model. So I think it might actually work out okay, although it’s hard to be certain. Something with QuickSync would obviously be preferable, since it could transcode in hardware instead of software.

I’m actually looking at the Synology DS3018xs. I need more disks and Imphal than the Celeron versions that have quick sync. Here is the link.
