Is it possible to setup a custom away server address for the Channels IOS app? When I choose "Away from home," it logs into my account but then fails to connect to my DVR. I've recently switched from forwarding the port on my router to using a reverse proxy. I can connect to the server away from home on my browser by manually entering the new reverse proxy address, but I can't see a way to set the server address in iOS. Is it hardcoded to the Channels-provided proxy?
This is not supported for remote access.
You can use a VPN (many users here use Tailscale), and manually enter the server's IP address as if you were connected locally.
But remote connections are only supported using Channels' own infrastructure; custom domain names/reverse proxies are not supported. If your ISP uses CGNAT and port forwarding is not an option, then a solution like Tailscale is really the best solution.
Thanks for the quick reply. I wound up installing Tailscale after running into some limitations with the reverse proxy. My company recently started locking down outside VPNs on my iPad so I might have to go back to port forwarding so that I can use the getchannels proxy. I was hoping typing the reverse proxy URI into the "Home" address would work, but as you know that did not.
Just to clarify, we are not proxying your traffic. We provide centralized authentication and DNS records, but all of the traffic goes directly from your client to your DVR.
Yes, it was. I have edited my original post, and by context the intent should have been clear that proxies are not supported.
The URL https://[redacted].u.channelsdvr.net:8089/ for accessing away from home looked like a proxy to me, but thanks for the clarification.
https://192-168-1-4.[YOUR AUTH SUBDOMAIN].channelsdvr.net:8089
will connect to your DVR at 192.168.1.4:8089
https://192-168-0-12.[YOUR AUTH SUBDOMAIN].channelsdvr.net:8089
will connect to your DVR at 192.168.0.12:8089
The number I redacted looked more like Hex...maybe it was the IP address converted? Not really important as my original question was answered...just curious.
May not be important to you, but for anyone reading your topic later in this "Community Forum"
the [redacted]
part of the url you posted is almost your full CDVR subscriber auth.subdomain (DNS) at channelsdvr.net
