Can a custom EPG be added?

yes, generally there is a (beta) way to embed xml epg in the server, especially for people from outside of the US.
In the web interface, when you add a new source you can pick the custom xml, as well as some other preset options. It is also possible to use it through a tvheadend > telly > channels setup ...
Generally I found some issues with foreign languages, that make use of non standard ASCII letters, like greek and hungarian though. And series passes do not work because channels can not figure out whats recorded and what not when no episode numbers are provided, or are in the wrong format ...
