Can someone explain to me what this option does? I've been updating my system and storage locations and want to make sure my database is as optimized as possible. What does deleting and recreating the database do? Are there any negative effects from doing this? Will it retain all my shows, passes, watched status, etc.?

It completely wipes out the Guide DB and loads all guide data. It does not affect anything else.

It is generally not something that needs to be done without being instructed to do so by a Developer.
The database is always as optimized as it needs to be. The database we use is automatically self-compacting. It should not be necessary to do this.
It just means you have to wait for the process to complete before you have guide data again and your server has to process it.

I do that when a source has added/removed or changed any channels.
I asked a long time ago what the different use cases were for the multiple guide update options and never got an answer.
