Deleted cache for already deleted file? Repeats for same files

This keeps repeating in the logs. It's always these same lines. Nothing about them change. What all does that mean?

This is fixed in the beta builds

Guess I will be waiting for a non beta build.

Heya @Jackamus!

I've seen that you've been weary to install pre-release builds even though they've solved a bunch of your issues. I totally understand not wanting to use an unstable version of software! But that's not exactly how our software process works. These aren't betas in the normal sense. They aren't unstable experiments. In fact, in a lot of cases, they're more stable! Just look at all the issues that you've run into that are actually currently fixed on the pre-release builds.

Our development and distribution process is that we fix bugs and publish a pre-release almost instantly after we fix the bug. This allows fans that run into issues to get the fix right away without us having to do a large scale release to EVERY Channels fan out there.

A lot of times these bugs are very specific to someone's computer setup or TVE provider. They don't warrant a full release right away. So we just sort of wait till we have a collection of good fixes and then do a major release. Everyone wins!

I totally get that you're worried about being on an unstable version, this IS the TV in the house we're talking about! But that's why we've made our software development flow to ensure that no one gets disrupted.

I am going to go with the beta release one more time. Crossing fingers.

I’m usually game to try out the latest and greatest (like Betas), but then when something weird happens there is always a question in my mind is it the beta, or something on my end. It would be great if there was an easy way to restore back to latest official release when needed for troubleshooting an issue.

Sort of like being able to roll back a firmware if something is wrong with a new one.

Yes, that would be nice. I am trying it out again. I know it sounds stupid, but TV in my main source of entertainment and stress/depression relief. It's my escape. If I don't have that escape I get cranky. I know, sad, but hey, it's me.

Could be nice if the Beta's had a change log. That way I know an issue has been addressed.

If this is the sort of thing that would you all more confidence in upgrading, I think this is an interesting idea. We'll need to discuss it internally on the best way to pull it off and the best way to present it in the UI.

This is something that we've discussed internally but presents a lot of complication. We're continuing to have more conversations and will continue to evaluate the best solution going forward, but I wanted to give you give you some of our thought process to date.

Yes, sometimes we do builds for easy-to-understand bug fixes that can be articulated in a way that make sense to users, but that isn't always the case. Sometimes the build is for an update to a pre-release feature that we're testing on our own DVRs that isn't exposed to users at all. Other times it's refactoring how some internal stuff works.

Quite often it's a bug fix for a subtle interaction when someone has a very specific set of things setup a certain way and it would take paragraphs to give enough context of the situation to make the fix make sense.

From time to time it's even just a stab in the dark: we think we've fixed a thing but we aren't sure, or we have added logging in hopes that we'll be able to catch a thing the next time it happens.

The thing that a change log does is allows for users to make an informed decision as to if issues they're having are going to be fixed in a given build. This means that the user needs to have a very good understanding of how the system works, a correct understanding of what the bug they're seeing is and then are able to understand the list of changes well enough to tell if the issue they're having is going to be fixed.

As a team of three developers, we've found that it is more successful for users to explain the issues they are having to us and allow us, with the understanding of the code, how the system works, and what has changed recently to give an informed opinion if the issue is fixed in a newer build or if they have found a new bug that we need to fix.

Thank you for continuing to engage with us on this and to give us insight into why you feel the way you do. It helps us navigate this and figure out the best solution for everyone.

You can always stop the Channels process, relink the latest directory to the last stable one (2019.12.05.0128 for instance), and restart Channels. Poof!, you've just rolled back to the latest stable.
