Discovery Channels and transferring to ipad

I get Discovery channels through Philo. Recordings work and play fine, but when I transfer to my ipad using VLC, they are unwatchable.
If I use the highest quality encoding available, they are ok, but still pretty bad.

Anyone else experiencing this? I've noticed it on OWN and HGTV. I've transferred other shows to my ipad from OTA and Bravo, and they all look fine, using the normal ipad encoding.

Can you elaborate on what “unwatchable” means? Do they not play at all?

They play. Just very low quality video. Looks like something you might have streamed in 1996.

They play and look fine on my tv and computer.

What are you using to re-encode? Why not just copy the original file?

I was using vlc player. I guess I could copy the file. That just takes a few more steps.

How is simply copying a file more steps than re-encoding/transcoding a file and then copying it over? Or perhaps you're just not doing a good job of explaining what is actually going on ... ?

I don’t have a Mac, so unless I’m missing something, to simply copy a file I’d have to somehow get it into iTunes and then use that to sync to my iPad. Unless there’s another way?

VLC on iOS has a "Sharing via WiFi" option that lets you copy the original file directly over to VLC. Just flip that on in the Network tab and it'll give you an IP address and port to navigate to. Then you can drag and drop the file directly to VLC without reencoding.

thank you! I was using VLC Streamer, and not VLC player. VLC Player is a much easier solution!
