Do I need to update Channels’ Docker image?

I am new to Docker but not to IT and am figuring out the best way to administer the platform. I am currently running eight containers in Linux Docker and do most of my administration in Portainer. With all my containers (except Channels) I download the latest image when it's time to update. That's super easy, especially in Portainer -- just a couple of clicks.

Channels is different because updates are done in the admin panel. It is super easy too and exactly the way it worked when I had it installed on straight Linux. I can pretty much see what's going on and that's super cool. However, I notice that the Docker container image is updated occasionally. For instance the latest image was updated 8 days ago.

So, my question is, do I need to keep up with these updates? The reason I ask is because other updates to various platforms are called out in this forum but I'm not seeing anything similar regarding docker image updates. I can certainly keep up with this myself and update when new images are posted. But, being new at this, I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

Nope. It's just a shell.

Thanks. I figured that was the case but the recent update made me wonder.

Thanks again.

In the case of the tve container, you may need to update it to get a newer Chrome. But it's not something you need to be actively doing unless you have a problem.

The update from 8 days ago contained no changes.

Thanks for this. I am pretty anal about keeping my Linux server updated, including Chrome. Will that translate through to the container or will the image need to be updated too? I’ve enjoyed being immune to all the Chrome issues I read about.

When you use docker its completely isolated, so nothing on your Linux host translates down into it.

Cool. Thanks again. I’m going to look up an overview of how a container is put together so I can keep my stupid questions to a minimum.

EDIT: Watched a 5 minute summary video and feel pretty stupid now. Docker seems pretty AWSy. Or is AWS pretty Dockery? Hmmm…

Check out "Watchtower" https://containrrr.dev/watchtower/ to avoid having the two clicks in Portainer

Depending on how you run your container, you can use Podman's auto-update, to automatically update all properly labeled containers.

Now that’s cool. What will I do with all the extra time?

Care to share. Been looking for a good high level overview as I've just dug into the weeds in a few places.
And I almost did that container image update until I saw this topic last week.
