Docker Slow

Is it slower under a docker container vs standard OS install?

I imported content this morning and it’s still indexing after 8 hours.

Anytime you virtualize something it will be slower. Also it depends on the horsepower of the host machine as well as what else is consuming resources. For most people, its not a big deal unless you do heavy transcoding or want comskip to run really fast etc. I use an Intel nuc with an i7 and can comskip a 1hr show in about 2 min. When I ran a test instance of channels on a VM, it took about 17min to do the same task.

It's all about whats the most important to you. For me, I had a spare NUC laying around so I figured why not...

How many files are you importing?
I would think importing local content is more disk than cpu intensive.

Don’t have the number but a good amount.

Emby and plex are much faster adding new content??

What exactly is it still doing? What does Activity show?

It was showing reindexing each episode.

So they already scanned it. The index is for optimized playback.

Thanks.

I moved the install to my Synology for now. After the import and indexing complete.

The number that sits on top of the album art that shows new are all over the place. Some -4 some only 1 when there is like 20 in-watcged episodes?

So this resolved after restarting the service.

Anyhow, I move back to docker and it’s so much slower. This runs off a Debian VM which runs off a ST50 Lenovo with a Zein processor.

I gave the VM 12 cores and 8 gigs of ram. Just this docker instance is incredibly slow.

Is there setting under docker perhaps that need changing?

I’m fairly new to docker.

Opps, think I figured it out.

I didn't allocate the correct core count.

I will re-evaluate.

So additional testing and I think I know what the issue is.

The Synology install is talking to the local disks only.

The docker install is talking over the network since the DVR/Database directory sit off the NAS.

I think this is where the performance decrease is happening.
