Does anyone have experience with the Synology DS923+?

Does anyone have any experience running the Synology DS923+ as a Channels DVR Server? Or any of the new AMD-based Synology NAS Servers?

I am looking to purchase a new NAS for Channels DVR, but I cannot find any of the Intel-based NAS servers for sale anymore.

I saw some threads about the lack of transcoding, but no one actually replied on how big of an issue it really is with Channels DVR. Thank you.

Synology DiskStation DS224+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure

I have bee using a Syn 1821+ as main channels dvr for a year, no real problems with the synology . 8 cores / AMD Ryzen Embedded V1500B

no issues with software transcoder for me

Try to find a 220+ - they are better than the 224+. I have a 218+ and it works great.

Thank you Dave! I appreciate it. You gave me a lot to think about.

Looks like the 1821+ has 4-cores and the 923+ has only 2 cores. I'm replacing a 2-bay 720+ that has hardware transcoding support and 4-cores. I'm trying to move from RAID 1 to RAID 5 to increase my storage capacity.

Sometimes I record up to 4 streams at once. I wonder if the drop in cores will be a bigger factor than transcoding. Since I expect to record multiple streams at once more often than watching through the web browser (and use the transcoding).

I tried recording eight streams simultaneously on my 218+. Four TVE and four OTA. It worked flawlessly. I have bumped up the RAM to 6 gigs. I have also tried playing four 4k Mkvs at the same time using the Infuse app on my Apple TVs. Again, although there was some stuttering, it was watchable. Everything is hardwired with gig ethernet which I think makes a difference also.

The main bottleneck for the DVR is going to be your disk I/O, generally not memory, network, or CPU.

Thanks for the response racameron. I'm not worried about disk IOPS or throughput on any Synology NAS. I have noticed a performance issue on my current DS720+ when detecting commercials in multiple recordings. Also, my NAS lags when searching my Channels DVR library while recoding streams. I did not want to compound them with a transcoding perforce hit.

Thank you for sharing your recoding experiences. I found this article that discusses real-world playback scenarios with the DS923+. It looks like transcoding makes a big difference. Especially since I have a bunch of MKV rips I made of my Blu-ray Discs.

I could not find a similar article for recording.

And I agree about hardwiring to gig ethernet. I also hardware everything that can be hardwired.

Thanks for everyone's help. I'll stick with my DS720+ for now. I ended up canceling the DS923+ and ordered 2 larger HDDs instead. Amazon currently has Cyber Monday deals on WD Red Pros. I ordered two 22TB drives. They are $334.99 each if you go into 'Other Sellers' and manually select Amazon. They are not in stock and will arrive mid-December.

I was also thinking of building my own NAS at one point. I feel the JONSBO N2 is beautiful enclosure and it has five 3.5" hot swappable bays.

I am curious about this comment. I have a 220+ but was thinking about upgrading to the 224+ for the bigger processor. I don't see any meaningful difference other than the CPU. Can you elaborate? It might save me some money.

I can't give you the technical reasons but go search for the reviews. Lots of disappointment. I was considering upgrading also.

Years ago I got the DS920+ primarily due to transcoding. It has an Intel CPU which has hardware that works well with transcoding. The DS960+ is discontinued as Synology is using AMD CPUs on it's newer hardware. This reddit thread discusses.
