Would having a VNC like Teamviewer running on my iMac where the Channels server is located significantly impact performance of watching DVR programs on my ATV?
No.
Thanks. I recently installed it and started noticing some buffering when watching so was wondering if that was causing an issue. I also thought I saw a recent post about VNC or something.
Thanks for clarifying!
Watching recordings at home uses very few resources. If you’re having buffering problems that means something is up with the network connection between the Apple TV and DVR.
Thanks! What about when recording?
Same, it’s just saving the video to disk. Not a lot involved.
Commercial detection is probably the most resource intensive part of the DVR.
I haven’t used TeamViewer but I don’t imagine it would be straining your system. You could check the macOS Activity Monitor.
The comment about VNC you saw related to away-from-Home viewing which requires the macOS video transcoder which is also used by other software such as Screen Sharing. Most macs can transcode multiple streams at a time though.
Thanks. One last idea… If, while recording the video from my antenna, there was some kind of major interference (where the picture become highly pixelated for a second), would Channels have a challenge in streaming that?
You would see the pixelation during playback.
You can try playing the recording directly on your Mac using VLC to see if the pixelation is in the recording or if something else is happening when you try to stream it.
Thanks. I was just wondering if the pixelation would someone require more processing than a normal video and thus cause the buffering. I was watching a recorded show and the buffering, while not terrible, was happening more than normal and the recording had a bit of pixelation from time to time.
There is no processing. The video is transferred over the network, then decoded on the Apple TV and rendered to the display.
