Don't have hdhomerun set up yet//would like to preview the channels app

I was able to get the Channels DVR app on my apple tv, but i cannot use it as i have not purchased my hdhomerun connect yet.

I was hoping (by signing up for the trial) to preview the guide on both Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV Stick.

Can i get the non dvr channels app on either or both during this trial??

Neither app works without a HDHomeRun.

You can add your TVE cable login into the DVR if you want to try things out.

There is no where on the Apple TV Channels DVR app to add source.

It's not on your Apple TV. You have to install the DVR server on a PC or NAS and set it up there.
