On a fully updated iOS and channels app, i have a 256 Gig iPad and still have 60 Gb free, but Channels stops downloading saying Downloads are paused due to low disk space. I’d really like to use most of that for more downloads.
We would too!
The issue here is iOS's disk space reporting. iOS is just not honest about it.
When iOS reports disk usage/storage it's actually all just made up. They use some sort of algorithm to show you an ESTIMATED available storage. The reason is that iOS tries to be too smart about how much storage is actually available due to ephemeral storage use in apps, as well as caches and reclaimable space from apps. This all amounts to the fact that iOS doesn't really freaking know how much storage it has available.
tl; dr: iOS's reported storage works COMPLETELY different than a regular desktop computer OS.
And what makes matters worse, this estimate is different than is reported to third party apps.
This gets us in the situation that Channels is told there's no available disk space, but the System Settings says there is. We've worked with Apple on and off for years to try to get this resolved, but they just don't seem to care.
So, at the end of the day, all a third party app can do is follow the APIs and trust what is reported to it. And in your case, the OS is telling it that it doesn't have enough storage space available.
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
