DRM and Cox Cable

Hi everyone,

I am having a spirited debate with a few Cox moderators at their support forum and if anyone has any additional input they’d like to provide them on why putting DRM on channels that I subscribe and pay for is complete BS head on over…

Thanks!

Do they DRM all of your channels, or just specific ones? Verizon Fios DRMs all Fox channels, which is a PITA.

Yeah, all the channels except the ones I would get with an antenna.

Wow, that sucks. I would run as far away from Cox as possible.

I agree with your frustration but I think you will be beating your head against the wall if you don’t have a competitor to switch too. I would say about 90% of what I watch from my FIOS Provider is the OTA type channels. CBS, NBC, CW, ABC, FOX (not the DRM FOX). But I also have HBO Now, Showtime, Hulu, Netflix etc. that I get directly from the source (or via iTunes Subscription). My goal is to reduce as much as possible what I get from my Internet Provider (Frontier FIOS). My son is on TWC and he got the LOCAL Only Package which was $10 per month over the cost of his Internet Package and gets everything else like I do. Not all Providers offer a low cost local (non DRM option).

Of course the other option is we get some help from Apple and Channels is able to add DRM Support. But that is out of our (and Channels) control so if it happens then great but not going to count on it.

Definitely recommend everyone complains to the FCC. Cable companies are within their rights to DRM everything, but the fact that consumers in most places don’t have the option to switch to another cable company with better plans and more consumer friendly practices is unacceptable.

I replied on there under the username “Sonic”. I’ve been subscribed to Cox Internet Ultimate since like 2012 and WAS thinking about adding TV services, but no more. You are right, it is all calculated to FORCE you to rent one of their stupid boxes.

So far, Cox in the Greater New Orleans area only has the Premium channels and 3 or 4 others that are DRM’d. But I know that will change sooner than later.
