DVB-S2 Tuner

With the new 2.0 update and grid guide, it’s killing me that there is no way to use Channels with a DVB-S/S2 source.

Now I know that Channels has been linked to HDHomeRun tuners and any news/updates on a DVB-S/S2 version from SiliconDust has gone quiet. That being the case, is there any chance of Channels supporting any other make/model of DVB-S/S2 tuner? SAT>IP devices and the protocol (Which is open source?) would seem like a natural choice?

I believe SIliconDust is working on a DVB-S/S2 tuner, but I have no idea when it will be available on the market.

We’ve looked into SAT>IP before, but the spec is quite complicated and it would be a considerable effort to implement into our. It’s even harder because we don’t use DVB-S/S2 here in the USA and have no way of testing whether our implementation worked or not.

Thanks for the reply.

Yer I’ve heard rumors of a HDHomeRun DVB-S/S2 device but things seem to have fallen flat on that front - Probably similar to your frustrations when it came to their DVR service!

Can I assume an output signal/stream from a ‘network tuner’ i.e. TVHeadEnd server would be too complicated to implement/manage?

Probably the same time a 6 tuner Prime?

For the US it is possible to get FTA satellite.

Although it is mainly religious programming and international language programming there is FTA (free to air) satellite available in the US: Galaxy 19 with over 250 FTA channels (though most are Standard Definition)

All you would need would be the dish and someone to point it to 97.0W, a sat switch (if you want multiple tuners to feed from the same Satellite off of 1 LNB/Dish) and the tuner (or settop). [Depending on where you are or if you are a DIY, the whole kit and install would be ~$300-$800] Most DirectTV independent installers would be able to do it easily (though they may not advertise it)

The tough part IMO would be the guide…
