Dvr options

So you can just use the Apple TV standalone for channnels dvr, you need to use a computer?

The DVR software must be installed on a computer or NAS

When I was first using just the Channels app, I falsely assumed that I would need a powerful NAS to run the DVR and be directly plugged into ethernet. I decided to test the app with an older MacBook pro (2014) that I have since turned into a desktop computer. That system is always on anyway, since it runs homebridge for my wifi lights/fans/thermostat. But it doesn’t even have an ethernet connection. It connects via AC wireless and has a 3TB USB drive connected to it.

It took seconds to install Channels DVR on this. And it works perfectly. I can record two channels simultaneously with no transcoding, and it just works. No stutter, no pixels, no glitches whatsoever. I have since turned the DVR transcoding on my Extend to ‘Heavy’ in order to reduce file sizes. But my point is that AC Wireless can handle the bandwidth. And a USB external drive works fine.

I still think it would be fun to set up a NAS, but there is no point when hardware that I already have in my house that would already be running anyway is working perfectly.
