DVR recorded wrong (sub)channel

Yesterday afternoon (July 10) my Channels DVR with HDHomeRun recorded the wrong show off the air. It was set to record NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt from virtual channel 11.1 (KNTV SF Bay Area) at 4:00 PM. Instead, it recorded a Spanish-language Telemundo news show (suspected from KSTS virtual subchannel 48.3, which is on the same RF channel).

Something similar happened on several weekends back in April-May. This problem went away back then and things have been fine for a couple of monts. However, yesterday (July 10) the DVR recorded both audio and video from the Telemundo subchannel, wheres before it was a mixture with video from KSTS and audio from KNTV. Both then and now, the problem was with the same show: NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt.

I wonder if the station is sending out some incorrect information for this show, which causes the DVR software to record the wrong stuff.

We'll see if it continues to happen.

Problem did NOT reoccur Tuesday, July 11.

Same thing happened again on Monday, September 18. DVR was set to record NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt from KNTV 11.1, but appears to have recorded 48.3 (Telemundo) instead.

Recording of this show was back to normal on Tuesday, September 19.

You might find something on the AVS forum thread for OTA in S.F. and if not, you could post the question there and probably at least get a reply.

Appears that KNTV and KSTS are broadcast on both physical channel 13 and 19.

Same thing happened again on Friday, November 3. DVR was set to record NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt from KNTV 11.1, but appears to have recorded 48.3 (Telemundo) instead.

In addition, strange things happen when selecting and playing the incorrect recording. When I select the recording, the screen displays a program length of 1640 minutes (the program is only 30 minutes long). Then, when I select Watch, the progress bar shows 1640 minutes at the right and the playback cursor displays 1590 minutes (1690-30). If i pause and try to move the cursor back toward 0, it always goes back to 1590 minutes. I can move the cursor forward from 1590 (e.g. to 1605 and play the program at that point, which is 15 minutes into the recorded Telemundo program).

And again Wednesday, November 8. Always only happens when set to record NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt. However, a slight difference is that this time the progress bar was normal (i.e. 30 minuutes).

Yet again Tuesday, November 28. Always only happens when set to record NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt. Progress bar was normal.

Can You block Telemundo, 48.3.
The Tuner may be getting messed up somehow or see if there is an update for your HDHomerun. update [HDHomeRun]

Thanks for the suggestions

I already have 48.3 blocked on both the HDHomeRun and the Channels app. Did that months ago (May?) when I first started having this problem.

I did need to update the firmware my HDHomeRun Flex 4K, so I did that. We'll see if the problem happens again.

What channel and tuner does the Channels DVR log show was being used to record these?
What does your pass look like?

If you're sure it recorded from KNTV 11.1, then the station is at fault and you can either notify them (Francis Sandico, KNTV-TV, 2450 North First Street, San Jose, CA 95131 408-432-4600) or ask in the SiliconDust Support Forum or the AVS forum (link I posted above).

You can also check the HDHR tuner system log (timestamps are UTC) if you want to post that to the SiliconDust forum.

Below is an excerpt from my Channels DVR log for the problematic recording on November 28. As you can see, it says it recorded 11.1. No mention of 48.3 anywhere in the logs.

I compared these logs to the logs from the successful recording from the previous day. The entries were identical except for various job and file numbers, etc.

Yes. The NBC and Telemundo programs are broadcast from two different locations here in the SF Bay Area. I think that's because there can be reception problems in some locations.

I'll look into accessing the HDHR logs.

Thanks for your suggestions.

You can also verify that the HDHR tuned to channel 11.1 by looking at the HDHR system log.
Those timestamps are UTC, so it would appear somewhere around 2023/11/29 00:00:08

This is a HDHR firmware bug, only they can fix it.

Unfortunately, my HDHR logs don't go back that far. I think they were cleared on November 30 when I updated the HDHR firmware. So I'll have to wait until the problem occurs again before I can check that.

BTW, when I was looking at my passes, I noticed there is the ability to specify the (virtual) channel number for recordings using that pass. I don't recall this feature being there before. Anyway, I changed the pass for NBC Nightly News so it specifies 11.1. I wonder if that will help.

tmm1: Thanks for the update. So it's an HDHR firmware bug. I wonder if it was fixed in the latest update I applied last week. Time will tell...

This feature has always been present in the webUI of the DVR, but was added to the client apps within recent months.

More likely it's a recently discovered bug that SiliconDust is aware of, otherwise he would have told you to update to firmware v 20231020, where it's fixed.
