This might be a dumb question. I am considering moving my Channels DVR installation from a Synology NAS to a Mac. But I'd like the DVR storage to still remain on the NAS. Can the server live on one machine and the storage live on another? Will this cause any issues or slow-downs?
Yes, but your experience will be up to your operating system's file sharing.
Channels DVR Server doesn't care where storage is, it just looks at paths it has access to. You manage this with your own operating system and file system.
What will make a difference is:
- how fast your network is
- how fast your operating system can use file sharing (macOS can be very bad with SMB sharing)
- how reliable your operating system keeps your file shares mounted
These are all variables that local storage does not have, that will be up to you to manage.
