Can I run the DVR without an Apple TV? I want to use a web browser to configure the service and view recordings. I plan on buying an Apple TV in the near future, but I wanted to try out Channels now.
Yes, one can use a browser to configure the DVR, record and view live/recorded shows.
You don’t need to purchase an Apple TV to use the DVR software, but you do need to make sure you own one of the supported tuners from SiliconDust and subscribe to the DVR service which is $8.00 a month. You also need to make sure you are running the DVR software on one of the supported operating systems (MacOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD or supported NAS).
You can cancel at any time.
Thanks. I have everything except for the Apple TV. I’ve been using an Amazon Fire TV for my set top box, but the Channels DVR is tempting me into buying another device.
Don’t forget that the downside to an Apple TV is that your shut out of Vudu and Amazon prime video.
Personally I have an apple dock and an hdmi for that, but it kills the “one for all” feel when I have to change hdmi inputs .
I mention it since you seem to have an amazon environment.
VUDU is coming soon supposedly.
I currently have a HDHR Connect Duo tuner and also have subscribed to the HDHR DVR but find Channels to be a much better interface. I have the Channels app on my iPhone and plan to install it on my MAC and subscribe to the Channels DVR. Once all that works then will upgrade to a couple of new Apple TV 4k’s.
Question…will having both the HDHR DVR and the Channels DVR be a conflict in any way preventing proper function?
