Entry Level Nas

I hear a lot of people talking about different Nas devices but they all cost a pretty penny. What is the lowest cost synology nas that I can use effectively?

right now I have been using a mac mini and I haven't had any problems out of it. I havent really got in to a lot of the features either but its been good to me. I'm just tired of when it has to be reset or updated etc.

I wouldn't go with anything less than the DS220+

If the Mini is working out fine and all you want to run is Channels DVR Server, I'd just stick with it.

that's my problem...on the mini i also run my main photos and video libraries...i run the controller for my network also. i thought me geting a nas would be killing 2 birds with 1 stone.

also how do I know what is more or less than the DS220+?

i see people talking about the DS218+ is that less than?

The way Synology NASes are named, the last 2 digits (18, 20) are release year (2018, 2020). The first digit often but not always indicates the number of drive slots. The "+" at the end indicates the capability set, so if you want more disks, you could investigate a DS420+, etc.

The last 2 digits of the Synology models are usually the year it was released. So the DS218+ was released in 2018, and the DS220+ is the newer model which was released in 2020. The step up from the DS220+ would be the DS720+, followed by the DS920+.

I have the DS918+, and am VERY happy with it. I use it for backups for all of our computers, Home Assistant, Plex, Channels, and more.

ok I just ordered a DS920+

we will see how this works out!!!
