I know there’s no way to do this currently in tvOS, and the iOS app with DVR access is forthcoming, but…
having a notification that a scheduled recording is about to start and/or has ended would be really helpful.

If you’re feeling particularly spry you could use incrond and a push service (pushover, prowl, etc.) to do this on your own for now.
Set up incrond to send a push on file creation then send another push when the file is closed. It probably wouldn’t have the best appearance but it would be function for now.
