Im currently on a Win 10 pro machine running Channels server, Docker, and a couple other servers all on 1 machine that has a motherboard and CPU that is near 20 yrs old. Im fixing to upgrade the CPU and motherboard so its Win11 pro compatible. BUT, Im looking to take the current machine and run Linux Mint on it, and install Docker on that machine. So Win 11 will be running Channels Server and my storage drives, etc.. Will I be able to connect to Docker via LM's IP on the network to retrieve my EPG's and XMLTV for Channels? This way I can Split the work load, because my current Win 10 machine is extremely sluggish and Im trying to speed things up and also upgrade for future updates.
I would also like to Maybe put the storage drives on the Linux Mint Machine but dont know how well that will work with The Win 11 machine writing to its drives.
Let me start out by saying I am in no way an expert on any of this. I feel like I need to have some kind of disclaimer on my comments due to my lack of knowledge, but being dumb never stopped me from talking.
Anyway, what you describe sounds a lot like my setup. I have an old Lenovo idea centre running Ubuntu that I use for my docker stuff like tubi and Pluto as well as my SMB shares. My channels dvr is on a mini n97 running windows 11 pro. I mapped my SMB drives to windows and they work fine. I just use the IP address with the port of the docker images to get the epg and m3u feeds on the windows machine to set them up in CDVR. It works just fine.
Your plan will work.
I feel you should take a close look at using that 20 year old computer. There is a good chance that replacing it with a N95, N100, or N150 computer will offer more CPU and faster disk than that computer at a substantially lower electric load. The savings could pay for the new computer in 1 to 4 years depending on the cost of electricity where you live.
I'm using a N100 based mini PC running Windows 11 Pro to run:
- Channels DVR with a HDHomerun Prime, TVE, a few IP TV Channels and the Stream Link Manager
- Plex
- Hyper-V
- A VM running a backup manager and also an SNMP manager
My storage is on a seperate box running UnRaid. There is no reason you could not place your storage on the mini PC.
