Frame drop in tvOS 16

No issues here with everything on default

@tmm1 frame drops on 24fps progressive imported content. Just sumbitted diagnostics. Audio driver default

Update. Pausing and playing 1 time makes the frame drops stop

I've just sent a new diagnostics log with frame drops using experimental audio driver.

I've been searching for a setting that would let me turn this stats overlay on. Please share how to enable it. But, if it is coming from HDHomeRun, then I don't have that. Was looking for an AppleTV function.

While watching a video on your Apple Tv, press the DOWN button on the control dial. It'll bring up "Info and Options". Now, press the RIGHT button, to go to "Options", then press "Down" then "Right", then "Down, Down" to "Show Stats" then press the Center button to select them and bring them up. Then press the "<" back button below the control pad to get the info screen to vanish. That'll leave the Specs screen for you to look at.

Do the same steps and Uncheck "Show Stats" to make it go away

This issue is still occurring and is very noticeable when watching something like the news that has a ticker tape/scrolling text at the bottom of the screen. Every few seconds it changes from smooth playback to a small hiccup and if I have the specs on the screen, I can see the dropped frames (output) increase at the same time it occurs.

I have the latest gen Apple TV 4K running tvOS 15.6 and Channels app 5.5.3
It occurs when watching a recording of an ATSC 3 broadcast with 1280x720 native resolution and 59.940 FPS. I've tried both the legacy and normal video driver and both have the issue. I've uploaded my diagnostics (but not sure where it went/how to identify which logs are mine)

Looking forward to getting this fixed because now that I've seen it, I can't stop seeing it. :frowning:

I have three ATV 4k devices and I do not see what you describe on any of them. I am using the latest beta on the ATV and on my server. This seems local to your particular configuration.

Must be a local ATSC 3.0 station issue.
@sdschramm what market are you in and what channels do you see the issues on

Still getting some frame drops using default video driver.
Legacy video driver is more stable.

Yep I’m getting frame drops and connection drops. Other apps playing sources fine. Changing interlacing to linear helps some - but that’s about it…

I’ve just sent a new log about these frame drops.

I am in the Washington DC metro area and yes the channel I'm watching is ATSC 3.0: WJLA 107.1

ATSC 3.0 is still a science experiment and no one should expect stability or reliable service from it. Video is up scaled to 1080p at the station, not native 1080p. ATV does not properly handle decoding and only creates 2 channel audio and reports the wrong bitrate.

If you haven't you might want to check the SD ATSC 3.0 forum and the AVS forum.

Happy to report this issue seems to be fixed for me. Not sure if it was due to my Apple TV being upgraded from tvOS 15.6 to 16 or it was fixed by a Channels app update but everything looks smooth now. Thank you!

@tmm1 just had massive frame drops on MNF via tve. Over 900 in a few seconds. I exited to the guide and the. Replayed the stream and it didn't happen the second time. I submitted diagnostics right after.

I am having a similar issue. When this is happening to you, does the playback overlay appear? I am having an issue where when I am watching sports occasionally it will stutter for a second and the playback guide will appear as if I touched the remote to fast forward or rewind. Trying to see if this is also part of the behavior you are seeing.
