When watching HD off air recordings on my Sony Bravia XH95 Android TV I get occasional frame drops of up to 0.5secs especially on content scene changes, although picture image quality is fine. Do not get this if using my iPad Pro or iPhone to watch the same recordings so its not the server. Have found by switching the video renderer from hardware to software on the Channels Android TV App, the frame drops stop, but the image deteriorates and becomes very soft with jerky motion. I have e mailed my logs to the support site and hope that its an issue with the android TV App (v4) that will get fixed in due course. Channels DVR is hosted on an ASUSTOR 6404T NAS and otherwise works perfectly.
Honestly I have a similar model tv and I have abandoned the internal apps. I use my appletv and have zero issues. The internal apps just stuck IMHO. The processor on a TV will never be able to compete with an external device.
I agree. TV makers really don't care about the apps or they would put in a better processors. But if that is all you have. That is all you have. Honestly the only time I would ever try to use the built in apps on a TV is if it is a bedroom (low usage) tv. Main TV can't stand sluggishness. I just want it to work.
Thanks for the advice. Interestingly the TV streams BBC iPlayer even with 4k sources without issues and similarly with you tube and ITV Hub Apps. It’s still strange that Channels DVR will not stream HD even in 2k without frame drops. Was just hoping maybe a more efficient video renderer in the Android TV app would fix the issue, since its only this app I have a issue with on the TV! No frame drops on any other TV app.
I'm sure if you submit some diagnostics @tmm1 will take a look for you. Are you using the android beta?
Try testing the speed to your server. /settings/support/test speed to server
60Kb or better recommended
Good luck,
Morris
Sent the diagnostics per the support page link on the server thanks
Thanks for the advice not sure how to do that, although the link from the server to the TV is WifFI 6 over 5GHz net using a TP LINK AX6000 Router so I dont believe the link is the issue.
Not sure I can get the TV to update to a beta as I dont see an option, although I have done that on the server side.
To test the speed to the server:
In the Android app, go to settings (gear)
go to support
go to test speed to server
Type of WiFi dose not guarantee good speed
Thanks for that I found the setting in the TV App and ran - It displayed 310Mb/s as the link to server, so I guess that is not the issue but thanks for showing me how to test it
Correct, your client is to blame. I had to turn off hardware rendering on my Android phone and it's still fine. It sounds like your TV's CPU dose not have the power to do the rendering. A Chromecast with Google TV or Firestick 4K will do a great job. Of the two, I have a strong preference for the Chromecast Google TV as it supports the Google Play Store and dose not lock you out of applications or only suggest Amazon content.
Thanks for the tip, may be a dongle will suffice for now. Was hoping though that maybe the android TV app can be upgraded for a more efficient and less client processor hungry renderer one day. Maybe the Channels folks can respond to the possibilities of such an update in future??
There's nothing we can do in software to compensate for slow hardware.
Ok Thanks for the response.
A bit more on this although the off air MP4 file I had trouble with would not play without frame drops I imported the same file same format and resolution into channels DVR using the TV shows manual import from another source and it plays perfectly! So not an issue with Android TV poor processing nor with Channels DVR I but maybe some form of off air DRM inserted by the broadcaster that tries to corrupt playback from my Server on a NAS I believe.
The video file is poorly muxed and requires jumping around parts of the file to read audio vs video data. When you try to do this over network mount the latency is too much
Thankyou, that would explain the situation. Excellent support for an excellent product , keep up the good work.
