Freeview surround sound

As discussed here: Dolby 5.1 - #64 by Robinlmp

There appears there is a piece of functionality missing to decode surround sound as typically encoded on Freeview HD channels here in the UK.

It means we get surround sound when watching live tv from our TVs but not from Channels which is sad.

What does View Details show for a recording off freeview

Here is an example of something that would play as Dolby Digital on the Sonos when watching directly from the LG tv.

I believe it is normal for Freeview HD TV to transmit surround as encoded stereo and expect the end devices to upmix / decode the surround channels. Not ideal, but I think that’s how they’ve got around a limited bandwidth so they can provide stereo and surround in one.

It is quite rare to get something transmitted as discrete surround on Freeview. It does happen, and those do play as Dolby Digital.

If there's only two channels of audio coming in then it's not surround sound. Does the HDHR app play the audio differently?

If you are lucky enough to receive a Dolby Digital encoded stream you'll need to pass this through to a receiver to decode anyway, no? Channels wouldn't touch it I would guess.
