Future of Channels?

I’m just curious what the future of Channels is? I was a DVR subscriber for a short period of time but the DVR wasn’t quite working out for our lifestyle so I cancelled it. I have been monitoring this forum since then (been months) and I haven’t noticed the progress that I saw in the past. I’m still very interested in Channels and want to give it another shot. I guess I’ve just been waiting for something to catch my eye…not sure what that is?

Channels DVR works great. No issues.

Well, don’t know what you are looking for if you’ve been monitoring the forums. Since April: Remote access is pretty solid, playback in Roku and Android. Lots of Stability, performance and user interface tweaks.

It looks like you already bought into Roamio OTA. So if your happy with that, probably no reason to change.

Honestly I don’t know what I’m looking for either? Didn’t know if the DVR was staying in beta phase? Any new pricing structures coming up? It was a solid platform when I used it…my wife just likes TiVo too much. I really wanted her to change

They’ve said it’ll be out of ‘beta’ soon.

I came from TiVo to Channels, but the wife’s been really happy with the change, except for…

Comparing to the TiVo it’s missing 2 key things that people will key in on:

  1. DRM support. It doesn’t affect me except for HBO/Showtime/Starz but affects a lot of people like my parents who would love to use Channels but their provider (Time Warner) DRMs almost everything.
  2. Take recordings on the go. This is partially implemented in the remote access, but I’d love to be able to put it on my device and take it with me to work so I don’t need to use my limited LTE data plan or cover areas with spotty service.

You could point plex to your recording folder and use plex sync to take them with you on the go, or just grab the file yourself and transfer it to your device.

I have scripts that automatically convert the files to mp4, add the edl as chapters, and then adds metadata to the file and puts it on NAS. From there it’s backed up in case anything happens to my NAS, it’s added to Plex, etc etc etc.

Or Channels could do it for people like my wife who know nothing about any of that.

@maddox hinted in July that it was a feature they would like to add, though I expect it’s not going to be In soon. Fortunately I can wait.

No fuss, easy option for conversion if one has an iOS device is Air Video HD. I used the previous non HD version when I first got an iPad…it was quite good and fairly fast.
